In the last article on Quantitative Ability you have known about the intricacies of the section of the CAT exam. You have known about the topics which are covered in the Quantitative Ability section. In the Part 2 of the article of MBAUniverse.com, we will talk about the preparation strategy for the Quantitative Ability section. Experts state the preparation strategy, material and taking test for Quantitative Ability.
Preparing for Quantitative Ability
In the Quantitative Ability section, speed and accuracy are the most important facets. So all you need to do is take care of these two aspects while preparing so that you can apply the same while attempting this section in CAT 2010. “A very simple but effective way to improve your speed with numbers is to observe the numbers that appear in a year and make all possible combinations with the four numbers - ratio of first two and the last two, total of the four digits, inverted ratio, etc. another could be doing calculations using mobile numbers, pin codes, etc..” suggests Manish Saraf, COO, PT Education.
Books and Preparation material for Quantitative Ability
To start with, you can refer to the basic preparation material for the Quantitative Ability section and then progress towards the books meant for CAT preparation. “I would suggest starting preparation with the very basic materials and which you are accustomed with. NCERT arithmetic text books from classes VIII to X are the best in this regard,” Kudva says.
Apart from the NCERT books, Saraf suggests books specially written for CAT entrance exam preparation like ‘How To Prepare For Quantitative Aptitude For The CAT’ by Arun Sharma (TATA-McGraw Hill publications), ‘Quantitative Aptitude for CAT’ by Nishit Sinha (Pearson publications), ‘Quantum CAT’ by Sarvesh Kumar Verma (Arihant publication) and ‘Quantitative Aptitude for MBA Entrance Examinations’ by Abhijit Guha (TATA-McGraw Hill publications).

Practice and Test leads to increase in speed and accuracy
According to Shiva Kumar, speed is a natural outcome of practice and regular test taking. “You have to practice only relevant chapters in which you are slow. For example, practice Number Theory and Algebra only for next two months. In any case do not attempt more than 10 to 12 questions in CAT 2009, and then the accuracy goes down. Ideally you should attempt only 10 questions without any mistake,” says Shiva Kumar. “You would notice that you solve certain types of problems faster than others. Use this information to identity your strength and weakness. Build your strength and work on your weakness. You need to minimize your areas of weakness by consistent practice. In the exam first solve the questions that you are comfortable with and are faster at solving,” says Kudva.
Sreenivasan gives a time table for the topic wise preparation of the Quantitative Ability section of CAT exam. “I would recommend alternating between areas. Monday - Arithmetic, Tuesday - Algebra, Wednesday - Geometry, Thursday - Modern Math, Friday - take test, Saturday - analyze, Sunday - revise weak areas. This, in a way, would ensure that you cover all the areas in the Quant equally,” Sreenivasan recommends.
Taking regular test will ensure that you get well versed in all the topics as well as increase your speed. “Taking a couple of speed math tests every day is a must. Basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry forms a broad classification of the topics that may appear in your paper. For both the sections, number theory, ratios, speed and distance, time are important,” Saraf advises.
